How to Synch a DWI

by Radien

Return to Radien's DWI Originals

After seeing several DWI tournaments take place, it's become apparent to me that a lot of people have trouble figuring out how to find the proper Gap and Tempo (BPM) values for the song they are intending to create a DWI file for. For that reason, I wrote this tutorial, in the hopes that I could make life easier on those authors new to the DWI-creation scene, to help them figure out what they can and can't use for their song choice, and to make the actual file-editing as painless as possible.

Finding the correct Tempo for a song before you even start creating the steps can be very rewarding in the long run, and I highly recommend taking these extra steps beforehand whenever you choose/consider a song. It is also possible to calculate the tempo fairly accurately, without having to fumble around with the F7 and F8 keys while you play the song.

This tutorial is an example of how to synch such a song, using Key of the Twilight, a song from the anime ".Hack//Sign" that I'm considering using for my next DWI. If you follow along, hopefully you'll be able to do it fairly easily as well.

To calculate the Tempo in the way that I am going to detail, you will need a way to measure the length of an audio selection down to a fraction of a second, a calculator, someplace to write notes, and of course, DWI. For this tutorial, I'm going to be using screenshots of the programs I use when I create DWIs. I recommend you try to use the same programs as the ones listed below:

  • Winamp
  • Notepad
  • GoldWave (an audio editor)
  • Dance With Intensity v2.xx

  • If you have any programs that you believe are superior and better for the job, by all means, use them. All of the ones above, however, are available for free. :) Also, it might be a good idea to read through the whole tutorial once before you start, to get an idea of what you will be doing.
