Though she calls the deserts of Zil Padon her home, Jalanda's true origins lie in the coastal regions of Jesora, amidst the ruins of Iris. 11 years ago, when Gaia first emerged, Iris was one of the towns caught in it's deadly search for life energy. Many Rafane attempted to flee from the shoots of the evil entity as they laid waste to the area, literally turning people to stone where they stood and ripping holes in reality itself. The 8 year old Jalanda was one such escapee; however, as her group made the mad dash southwards for safety, one of the waves of dimentional force crashed across them, causing the clan to be trapped. Jalanda was the hardest hit by this, catching the wave full on in her side and resulting in her small frame being flung far away from her family, crying out in a mix of pain and anguish before everything finally went black.
When she regained consciousness some time later, Jalanda awoke in a hastily constructed tent in a desert oasis, occupied by an aging camel-esque Alqadan by the name of Sallam. He revealed that he too was from an area devestated by Gaia, and found her wounded in the dunes on his way to seek refuge in the great city of Zil Padon. Though he had done his best to heal her wounds, Jalanda still bore many scars all along the right side of her body, a reminder of what had transpired back home. Considering she was still injured, Sallam agreed to take the girl at least as far as Zil since he had heard other Rafane were heading there, and hopefully back to a surviving family member.
Over time, refugees continued to pour into Zil Padon following the defeat of Gaia and the Mogay's open door policy, but he was unable to locate any of her immediate relatives among them. Considering the natural disparity between the two races and the fact he had fuffilled his promise to the child, Sallam was about to let Jalanda fend for herself in the great city, when he started to notice something strange. The recovered girl began to display an uncanny knack for seeing into the future - from something simple like what you were going to eat for dinner that night, to hazy predictions regarding people's true loves and even deaths. While this disturbed many, this intrigued the old Alqadan, for he himself had been an accomplished fortuneteller for years and rarely seen such a natural talent, least of all in a Rafane at that! Sallam reconsidered his position on the matter of her care, and extended an offer to take Jalanda under his wing, and personally teach her the ancient arts of Alqadan divination. She desired as well to learn how to understand and harnass her gifts, and was quick to accept.
Over the course of several years, she studied diligently under her master, becoming quite a powerful mystic, yet there always was the sense that she did not belong. Put down by her fellow Rafane for adopting the "uncooth" customs of the Alqada, and mistrusted by the Alqadas themselves for her skill that rivalled their own, Jalanda grew into a very silent and reserved woman, straddling the very fine cultural line of the land. But it was not even just that, for she somehow felt incomplete, like she was meant to use her gifts for some greater purpose, a fate that even all her powers of clairevoyance could not reveal to her.
It was then one day while performing a scrying ritual, that she came upon a vision within her crystal ball. A great star falling from the heavens towards Messina, carrying the spirit of destiny with it, calling to her. Jalanda took this to be the sign that she was awaiting, and without another hesitation began quietly packing her bags. Sallam, still being a bit protective of her after all this time, protested this sudden rash course of action, be even he knew deep down that she was still troubled by her tragic past and an even more uncertain future. With his final blessing, Jalanda set out to the lands to the west to find just what (or who) it was the Spirits of Fate wished for her to see.
Appearance/Personality:Updates—spoiler warning!
While Jalanda sees herself primarily as an observer, it's becoming clear to her that there is more to her involvement in this adventure than meets the eye. When the party encountered the Great Angler, an ancient spirit fish of the deep sea driven mad by Gaia's power, Jalanda felt a strange and disturbing stirring within her, something responding to the creature's corruption. After the battle with the Great Angler, in which Nathan captured an anti-Spirit and imprisoned it within a Spirit Stone shard, Jalanda felt something familiar about the shard. What all this means is yet to be determined, but it seems there is more to her lingering injuries and strange powers than even she knew. As they continue west, she hopes to find more answers.
