The world of Grandia is, so far as we know, made up of three major continents: Messina, Elencia, and a third continent known in the original game only as East Elencia (but which I have chosen to call Jesora, in order to avoid confusion). Until about a century or two before the present day, Elencia was only known of in legend, and until Justin proved that the End of the World wasn't really the end of the world, most people believed that the world was flat and that the wall marked its edge. Still, the ghost ship Feena, Justin, and Sue encountered early in the game had a globe of the earth on it, suggesting that at one time people believed the world was round. Who knows, perhaps they were right; no one has yet circumnavigated the globe, so it is impossible to tell for certain, though when seen from the height of Alent, the world does seem to have a circular shape.
Ever since Justin's adventures brought the different parts of the world together, travel between continents, while uncommon and difficult, is now a real possibility. People of all sorts of races have spread throughout the lands, resulting in a much more cosmopolitan culture than that of a decade ago. Our story takes place eleven years after Justin's great victory against Gaia, or a year after the epilogue where he and Feena returned to Parm. At this time there are Mogay, beastmen, Lainians, Alqada, and more races living in Parm, and most likely in other cities across the continents, as well.
In the Grandia IRC RPG, we will be filling in a few of the blank spots in this world's history and on its world map. West of the continent of Messina, where Parm is, are more countries, all of which have participated in the recent industrial revolution and many of which were at war with Messina's Garlyle Forces at one time or another. The Forces have now been taken over again by the Joule Foundation, Messina's governing body, but while they have not disbanded, they serve a much more peaceful role now. Military might has given way to diplomacy. The lands west of Parm are known as the most civilized in the world by many—much as Europe was considered the center of civilization for several centuries—but now they are also learning of the value of other cultures beyond the End of the World. Beyond these lands lies a vast western ocean that seems to stretch on forever; one can sail so long on it without finding any land, even islands, that most sailors consider it pointless and suicidal to try to cross it, if it indeed has an end at all.
Other points of interest and major events are the upcoming Summit of Nations in Messina's capital, to the west of Parm...the new University of Archaeology established near the town of Sult, northwest of Parm...the Center for Science and Technology and other educational institutions scattered throughout the western lands...and of course the newly built Icarian Temple in Elencia, a building that Feena vehemently opposed, but one that no one can deny is a masterpiece of beautiful architecture. Built to honor the Spirits as much as the Icarians, if not more, the temple houses the Spirit Sword when it is not in use, though to be honest, Justin carries it with him nearly everywhere he goes. Most consider it his right, and everyone acknowledges that the new Spirit Stone truly belongs with an Icarian and the Spirits' chosen one anyway. Besides, the two have never let their fame go to their heads; all they ever really wanted to do was go adventuring, and that is exactly what they have done. Meanwhile, the previously mentioned University of Archaeology was actually started by Mullen and Leen. Leen has been working on the educational system all over Messina and does not actually run the university herself, but it was her idea and she put a great deal of work into designing the school and recruiting teachers and students. Mullen has quit the military and become a diplomat, traveling to other countries in order to foster good will and working to keep this precious new peace the world has found. He also does his best to aid Leen with her educational work when he can spare the time, and she accompanies him on many of his diplomatic journeys, speaking to the leaders of other countries about the creation of schools and national centers of learning.
Overall, the world is very different from the one Justin grew up in, and yet somehow very much the same—some things never change. If anything, it is the same old world, but a bigger one with greater hope for the future, with more places to explore and travel but with the world's people drawing continually closer and supporting each other as if it were but a small village. However, though hope and peace are beginning to spread throughout the world of Grandia, humanity still retains its free will, and some may choose evil. And perhaps the world has still not been entirely explored; maybe there are incredible wonders yet to be discovered that not even Justin and Feena have found...
...So who's up for an adventure? ^_~
