Races in Runic Flux

Introduction  (blah blah blah)

         A common request in any role-playing game is to play races that don't exist in the real world. Everyone knows about dwarves and elves and such, but those races don't exist as we know them in the world of Runic Flux.

         Runic Flux is meant to be original enough that it encourages you to think up new ideas, rather than borrow others. Even small changes from what's already out there will give you more freedom to be original later on down the line. It may sound like it's not as much fun when you don't get to play your favorite Elf or Kender race, but just think how much fun it can be to not only make up a unique personality, but to find their place in an all-new race!

         So, to give the game more flexibility, we don't name specific races unless they come up in the story. This doesn't mean the Blue Crescent is open to every fictional race ever created, but you won't find out what kind of variety there is until your characters discover them in the story.

Classification

         Even though there are a variety of different non-human races on the Blue Crescent, known and unknown, they can all be classified as one of these two types:

Mystic Races and Feral Races.

Meruru of a half-feline race          Feral races  are races that somehow became a sort of hybrid between humans and one or more particular animals. In the anime tradition, the ratio of these races is usually at least 70% human in appearance. Most of the differences are in individual features: markings, patches of fur, flapped ears, "fangs," slightly different facial features, and sometimes even appendages like a tail.

Fam the Wiggin
         Ruin Explorer's character "Fam," Escaflowne's "Meruru" (Merle in English), Rapp from Grandia, and the Beastmen of the Lunar series are classic examples of Feral races that might be made up for this game. ^_^

         Mystic races  on the other hand are races that are inherantly magical. This doesn't necessarily mean that they are all a bunch of wisps of light or tiny winged people, although we don't rule that out completely. ^_~  Mystic races sometimes look quite human, other times look a whole lot like animals, and sometimes they don't look much like anything you've ever seen before. The thing that sets them apart is that they were originally the product of some magical event in the past, rather than something more along the lines of evolution.

Ki-Lin the Half-Unicorn          In some eras Mystic races aren't completely unheard of, usually because magic is widely accepted as a part of everyday life. However, dramatically different creatures that look exceedling different from anything you've ever seen or highly powerful races are rare, and usually far away from the central part of the area this adventure will be taking place in -- The continent is just too small to have contained them without being drastically affected.

         Now that you've gotten an overview of the races, you can think about one you'd like to make yourself. We don't have many non-human characters yet, but once we do I may open up a new section for races that have been discovered so far.

         Note:  The "Mystic" type of races used to be called "Fae," but I found that it was entirely too limiting. The word "Fae" actually refers to an idea with strong Celtic roots, not to mention it is closely related to some religions. When people hear "Fae" they usually think exclusive of faeries like you see in A Midsummer Night's Dream. While I don't want to eliminate that style completely, I certainly don't want it to cause players to limit their ideas to just that, either.  ^_^;
